Dual Computer Switch
How do I use a router switch to connect two networks?
Earlier I asked about using windows server or XP to connect two networks and got referred to using a switch. My question is, how do I connect two networks using a switch? The following is exactly what I wish to accomplish. One network is a company global network, the other is a private network (192.168.100.X IPs). Many of the computers on the private network we DO NOT want visible on the global network and we want to minimize any potential threats from that network (viruses, worms, etc). We only want one computer to be visible to both networks. By placing files from private networked computers onto this one dual network computer, we will be able to transfer those file from the private network to the global while maintaining as much “distance” between the networks as possible, to minimize hazards. I realize the dual networked computer is the weak link and will need strong defenses. How do I make this work…with a switch?
Hmm.. couple ways to skin the cat here. First question. Is your private network needing any data from the global network? If it does than you will need a router or your intermediate system needs to have packet forwarding. This is the case with internet, etc.
If the private network does not need to see anything outside of their own network, then you can dual hone a system and adjust firewalls accordingly.
You can do this with an XP box either way. Does need to be Professional with SP2. You can use server, but why incur the cost? You can do it with Linux also. Just depends on your level of geekdom that you want to try out.
